Pharmacokinetic study (PK study)

Pharmacokinetics describes what happens to a medicine in a person's body in the hours and days after they take it.

After someone takes a medicine, their body absorbs it, breaks it down, and gets rid of it over time. To study this, a participant takes a medicine and then gives several samples of blood or other body fluids over a day or so. In the samples, we can measure levels of the medicine and the parts it is broken down into. This shows how the body absorbs, breaks down and eliminates the medicine.
