Multiple breath washout (MBW)

A way to measure LCI score.

The person breathes normally into a machine that measures how the lungs get rid of a gas. It uses either a gas already in the lungs (nitrogen) or a gas breathed into the lungs, which does not react with anything and is not absorbed into the body (an “inert” gas). The machine works out how much breathing the person had to do to get rid of the gas from their lungs. The results are used to calculate LCI score and shows how well air moves throughout the lungs
