Body mass index (BMI)
A way of measuring a person’s weight compared to their height.
BMI stands for body mass index. It is one way of measuring a person’s weight compared to their height. It is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by their height in metres squared (multiplied by itself). The final number can show if someone is underweight, ideal weight, overweight or obese. Your BMI might not always reflect your health, as it does not measure your body fat percentage or the amount of muscle you have.
