Abstract:

Antibiotic treatments based on current laboratory tests often do not result in clinical
improvement in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). We propose to assess if a personalized
approach to antimicrobial susceptibility testing could lead to a more rational selection of
antibiotics to treat respiratory tract infections. To this end, the influence of the patient genetic
background (CFTR mutations) and unique lung microbiome (collection of microorganisms in the
lung) on antibiotic efficacy against the major CF pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa will be
studied. This project may lead to novel antibiotic susceptibility approaches that are personalized,
and have the potential to significantly improve the quality of care for CF patients.
